David Le Gallant Obituary

March 15, 1948 ~ February 17, 2026

Peacefully at Prince County Hospital in Summerside on February 17, 2026, David Le Gallant passed away at the age of 77. He had been residing at Summerset Manor for the past month but was formerly from Mont-Carmel, Prince Edward Island. Born on March 15, 1948, he was the son of the late Alyre H. Gallant and the late Elva Gallant.

He leaves to mourn his eight brothers and four sisters: Anne (Wilfred), Freddie, Marie-Claire (Ronnie), Cedric (Norma), Bernice (Donald), Yvon, Paul, Jeanne (Roger), Lionel, Pierre (Donna), Robert and Raymond (Janine), as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members. He also leaves to mourn his maternal uncle, Ferdinand of Cap-Egmont, and his paternal uncle, Raymond (Béatrice) of Toronto.

He was predeceased by his parents, a sister and a brother in childhood, Bernice and Pierre, his paternal grandparents, Honoré and Loretta Gallant; and his maternal grandparents, Sylvain and Matilda Gallant.

Throughout his life, he pursued his studies in various fields, both in his country and abroad. Curious about the world, he traveled extensively, often hitchhiking while proudly wearing his red beret. Among other things, his passion for the Olympic Games and for opera led him to travel widely, where he met many people around the world. In his last position, he worked as a proofreader for La Voix acadienne for about twelve years.

David was a globetrotter passionate about history and a fervent advocate for the Acadian cause, notably as founding president of the Société internationale Veritas Acadie, a position he held from 2009 until his passing. He also served as editor-in-chief of the journal Veritas Acadie from its first issue in 2012. With his team and numerous collaborators, 13 high-quality issues of the journal were published on various topics relating to the Acadian cause around the world. All this was accomplished in addition to his many travels throughout Acadia, his public positions and initiatives, and his numerous written contributions in various media outlets. His commitment to historical accuracy and his courage in refusing to downplay Acadian history made him the tenacious patriot he was.

The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Prince County Hospital, as well as the staff of Summerset Manor, for their excellent care and kindness toward David.

Visitation will take place at the Évangéline Funeral Home, 900 Route 124, Urbainville, on Sunday, February 22 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and on Monday, February 23 from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. A service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the same location. Interment will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in David’s memory may be made to Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel Church or to La Voix acadienne, two organizations that were dear to him.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the professional care of the Évangéline Funeral Cooperative. If you wish to send a message of condolence, please email: evangelinefh1986@gmail.com.
